The public record currently consists of photographs: streets, rooms, people, weather, found arrangements and light conducting unauthorised experiments on ordinary things. Drawings and 3D work will be entered later, provided they survive examination and the applicable forms can be located.
Beside the gallery is a collection of case files on art and image science. They follow pictures backwards through displays, code, colour models, sensors, film, lenses and light, looking for the point where description became belief.
The trail is not clean.
A camera does not preserve a scene. It produces a new object from a brief encounter between the world and a machine. Software then fills gaps, resolves ambiguities and prepares the result for a display that adds its own account. By the time the image reaches a pair of eyes, several interested parties have handled the evidence.
Film-Juicer is one of the related cases: a program that follows colour film through its physical stages instead of spraying vague nostalgia over the result. Other projects are filed alongside it as the inquiry expands.
The officer responsible is a bureaucrat by profession, a photographer by persistence, and a programmer when the machinery leaves no other avenue of appeal. He knows that a file can be complete and still explain nothing. This has proved useful.
